Description This document is the final report on the dataset.

This report contains statistics on recorded deaths (death registrations) for 1996 in South Africa. The statistical information is extracted from the Death Registration Form (BI-17) and the Medical Certificate (BI-12) submitted to the Department of Home Affairs. As from
1991 statistical information regarding recorded deaths obtained from the Department of Home Affairs does not have the population group identifier. The tables in this report therefore contain information for all population groups combined.
2. All deaths have been tabulated on a de jure basis, that is, according to the place of residence of the deceased.
3. Geographic tables were done according to the nine provinces, magisterial districts and urban, non-urban residence.
4. Starting with the current report, the tenth revision of the international classification of diseases (ICD-10) replaces the ninth revision (ICD-9) as the official coding system for publishing causes of death.
5. As from 1 October 1992 unnatural (external) causes of death are stated as ‘unnatural’ only and are no longer specified in detail on the death register form of the Department of Home Affairs. However some physicians optionally specify the cause of the unnatural death.
Due to demand for details on external causes of death, this report gives the available breakdown of unnatural causes of death.
