<svar a="all" v="CA91A445"><span class="h3">Question 10: Language first learned at home in childhood</span><br /><div class="i1"><span class="em">This information is used in programs which protect the rights of Canadians under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.</span><br />Report the first language learned <span class="em">at home</span> before starting school. If this language is no longer understood, report the second language learned.<br />If more than one language is understood, report the language first learned at home. If two languages were learned at the same time, report the language spoken <span class="em">most often as a child at home</span>. If both languages were used <span class="em">equally often</span>, report <span class="em">both</span>.<br />For a child who has not yet learned a language, report the first language this child will learn <span class="em">at home</span>. If two languages will be learned at the same time, report the one which will be used most often to speak to this child. If both languages are used <span class="em">equally often</span>, report <span class="em">both</span>.<br />If a person speaks an <span class="em">Indian </span>language (from <span class="em">India</span>), do not report Indian but rather the specific language such as Hindi, Urdu or Punjabi.<br />If a person speaks an <span class="em">Amerindian </span>(North American Indian) language, report the specific Amerindian language such as Cree or Ojibway.</div><br /></svar>
