Description The present report is based on sch.1.0 only, that is, primarily on consumer expenditure data, along with some information on demographic particulars and household characteristics that sch.1.0 collects. A special feature of the consumer expenditure schedule used in the quinquennial rounds is the provision for simultaneous collection of data on consumption for a month and a year for certain items whose consumption at the household level is not likely to be regular, e.g. durable goods, clothing and footwear.

Description In the quinquennial surveys two separate schedules are canvassed - sch.1.0 for consumer expenditure and sch.10 for employment situation - in each sample household, enabling cross- tabulation of consumer expenditure and employment data. The present report, however, is based on sch.1.0 only, that is, primarily on consumer expenditure data, along with some information on demographic particulars and household characteristics that sch.1.0 collects. A special feature of the consumer expenditure schedule used in the quinquennial rounds is the provision for simultaneous collection of data on consumption for a month and a year for certain items whose consumption at the household level does not have a monthly regularity, e.g. durable goods, clothing and footwear. This report is based on the combined sample and presents the basic results on household consumer expenditure at state and all-India level. It gives (a) distributions of households and persons by value of monthly per capita consumer expenditure (b) averages (state and all-India) of monthly per capita consumer expenditure (c) the break-up of these average values by important heads of consumption (d) break-ups of quantity and value of per capita cereal consumption by cereal type (rice, wheat, etc.). Estimates are presented separately for rural and urban sectors. The estimates of (b), (c) and (d), moreover, are presented separately for twelve different segments of the population (called MPCE classes) demarcated by level of per capita consumer expenditure. Estimated numbers of males and females, adults and children, and of consumer units per 1000 households are likewise given for different MPCE classes.

Description The present report deals with particulars of Dwellings in India. The report contains detailed tables on the different aspects of dwelling such as type of structure, house category, ownership etc. by state/UT. According to NSS practice, all information has been classified by average monthly per capita expenditure (MPCE) classes, a format which has in the past proved extremely helpful to the users and researchers in various areas. Adjustment of MPCE for the urban households taking into account the imputed rent for own-dwellings has also been made and compared with the unadjusted MPCE. Observed trends by some important indicators of the housing situation over the decade (1983 to 1993-94) have also been presented.

Description Eleven reports based on this survey have so far been released. Some deal with the variation of consumer expenditure over different sections of population, over states, and over commodities. Others focus on different household characteristics on which information was collected along with consumption data. They include level and pattern of consumer expenditure, consumption of some important commodities, nutritional intake of the population, characteristics of dwellings, energy used by households, sources of household income, differences in level of consumption among socio-economic groups, adequacy of food intake, IRDP assistance & participation in public works, use of durable goods in India, ownership of livestock and cultivation of cereals. The present report is the twelfth of the series. This report studies tobacco consumption habits of the Indian population. Four forms of tobacco consumption were distinguished in the survey: smoking, chewing of tobacco, use of snuff, and use of burnt tobacco powder or paste. Such data were last released for the 43rd round survey of NSSO, which related to the year 1987-88. It may be noted that only data on prevalence of tobacco consumption habits are presented here, and not estimates of expenditure on tobacco. The latter may be found in NSS Report No.404: Consumption of Some Important Commodities in India, 1993-94. The report presents estimates of proportions of persons of different sexes, ages, and social groups in rural and urban areas of each state and u.t. of India with a regular/casual habit of consuming tobacco in each of the four forms distinguished here.

The report contains detailed tables on the different aspects of the primary source of energy used for cooking and lighting by the Indian households for each state and UT. According to NSS practice, all information has been classified by average monthly per capita expenditure (MPCE) classes, a format which has in the past proved extremely helpful to the users and researchers in various
