    Individual Food Consumption/Dietary Survey [hh/ifcs]

    Abstract

The objective of the survey was to assess the prevalence and spread of macro and micronutrient deficiencies and to determine the nutritional status and nutrient intakes of rural populations in Zambia. The data was needed to provide information on food consumption patterns and nutritional status to inform policy and programming. The survey was conducted in two provinces, Luapula and Northern.

    Scope

    Notes

    The survey collected information on:

    • SUBJECTS: information on the participants such as age, sex and geographical location
    • CONSUMPTION: information on all foods consumed by each participant in each survey day, including quantities and nutrient values

    Coverage

    Geographic Coverage

    Sub-national coverage, only rural areas.

    Universe

The population groups covered in the survey were women of reproductive age (15-49 years old) and children (6-59 months old).

    Sampling

    Sampling Procedure

The primary sampling unit for the survey was a Standard Enumeration Area (SEA), or cluster, as demarcated by the Zambia Population and Housing Census of 2010. A two-stage procedure was used to select the sample. In the first stage, the SEAs for each sub-county (CSA) were selected with a probability proportional to their size (PPS). In the second stage, households with the eligible pair of individuals (mother/child) were selected on-the-spot: first taking the random selection of a direction from the center of the cluster; then the random selection of the first household in the selected direction; and finally selection of subsequent households by proximity.

    Weighting

No survey weights were used in this survey.
