    This is the first GATS conducted by Cameroon.

    Abstract

    The Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) is the global standard to systematically monitor adult tobacco use and track key tobacco control indicators. GATS is a nationally representative household survey of adults 15 years of age or older, using a standard protocol. It is intended to generate comparable data within and across countries. GATS enhances countries' capacity to design, implement and evaluate tobacco control interventions.

    GATS is composed for a set of core and optional questions designed to gather data on the following domains:

    1. Background characteristics: Gender, age, education, work status, possession of household items.
    2. Tobacco smoking: Pattern of use; Former/past tobacco consumption; Age of initiation of daily smoking; Frequency of consumption of different smoked tobacco products; Nicotine dependence, Frequency of quit attempts.
    3. Smokeless Tobacco: Pattern of use; Former/past tobacco consumption; Age of initiation of daily smokeless tobacco use; Frequency of consumption of different smokeless tobacco products; Nicotine dependence, Frequency of quit attempts.
    4. Cessation: Advice to quit smoking/smokeless tobacco use by health care provider; Methods used to try to stop smoking/smokeless tobacco use.
    5. Second-hand smoke exposure: Smoking allowed in the home; Exposure to secondhand smoke at home and public places; Indoor smoking policy at work place; Knowledge of serious illness in non-smokers due to secondhand smoke.
    6. Economics: Type of tobacco product and quantity bought; Cost, brand and type of tobacco products(s); Source of tobacco products.
    7. Media: Exposure to tobacco related advertisement in various places; Exposure to sporting events connected with tobacco; Exposure to music, theatre, art or fashion events connected with tobacco; Exposure to tobacco promotion activities; Health warning labels on cigarette packages; Exposure to anti-tobacco advertising and information.
    8. Knowledge attitudes and perceptions: Knowledge about health effects of smoking/smokeless tobacco use.

    Countries may also select optional modules on Water Pipe (Shisha/Nargile) and Electronic Cigarettes.

    Sampling Procedure

    Using a multistage stratified cluster sample design, a total of 5,710 households were sampled and one individual was randomly selected from each participating household to complete the survey.

    Response Rate

    There were a total of 5,271 completed individual interviews with an overall response rate of 94.1%.

    Access conditions

    The user undertakes:
    (1) to acknowledge the data source.
