Also contained in this data file is a household code ('hhid') which was generated by the distributor, DataFirst, using geographic information and the household number for each observation. This variable uniquely identifies each household in the dataset. The data file also contains the variable 'peshhwei' - household weight, which was generated by Statistics South Africa to compensate for the census undercount. Please refer to the metadata on sampling for more information on these weighting variables. |
SA Census 1996 Person_v01
This file contains data related to part A of the household and personal questionnaire, the summary book for hostels, the enumerators book for special enumeration and the person in hostel questionnaire of the 1996 South African Census (see the metadata on questionnaires for more information). These data pertain to individuals enumerated during the 1996 South African Census represented in the 10% sample provided by Statistics South Africa.
Also contained in this data file is a household code ('hhid') generated by the distributor, DataFirst, using geographic information and the household number for each observation. This variable associates observations within the person data file with households, for which the household ID is uniquely associated. The data file also contains the variable 'pesphwei' - person weight, which was generated by Statistics South Africa to compensate for the census undercount. Please refer to the metadata on sampling for more information on these weighting variables. |
SA Census 1996 Merged_v01
This data file was created by merging the household and person data files from the South African Census 1996, both of which are 10% samples of the full, original census.
Also contained in this data file is a household code ('hhid') which was generated by the distributor, DataFirst, using geographic information and the household number for each observation. This variable was used to merge the person and household data files. The data file also contains the variable 'peshhwei' (household weight) and 'pesphwei' (person weight) which was generated by Statistics South Africa to compensate for the census undercount.
