Abstract
spatial growth of population and human settlement is a
universal process. The objective of this research is to analyze the
urban growth of Bhaktapur district using the Landsat satellite
Images of 1988, 1998, 2010 and 2015. Bhaktapur district has been
selected as the study area for this study. Bhaktapur has
undergone a radical change in its physical form, not only on its
vast urbanized territorial expansion but also through an internal
physical transformation over the last decades. Unsupervised
classification technique followed with correction according to the
supporting documents was applied to prepare the land cover map
with five land cover classes. The study showed that almost all
the land cover components have changed (gains or losses)
according to the time into one another. Especially in last 5
years. The increase in built-up area is prominent in
Bhaktapur district over the years (1989-2015).The built-up
area increased from 1.8% to 24.0% of the total study area
in between 1988 and 2015. The rate of urbanization was
dramatic in between 2010 to 2015. About 12.9% of the
total study area was converted into the built-up area in last
5 years period alone. Expansion of road might be one of
the main factors, which increased the urbanization
dramatically.
