Abstract
The present study focuses on the characteristics of human adjustment strategies
to cope with river bank erosion hazard among inhabitants of the Jamuna
floodplain of Bangladesh. Based on a sample survey of 547 randomly
selected households, the study found that the strategies taken at the community
levelfall in the preventive category while at the individual level adjustment
measures were more of the corrective type. Overall, such patterns are
indicative of a divergent goal and role of individual and institutional measures
to minimize hazard loss.
