Abstract |
A study was carried out at the Research and teaching Farm of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi to investigate semen fertility of two breeds of turkeys in Bauchi for a period of 4 months (September –December 2001). The two breeds used for the study were the Holland white (LHW) and indigenous (I) breeds. Artificial Insemination (A.I.) fertility trial showed that there were significant (P?0.01) breed differences in fertility and hatchability percentages, the values being 65.94% and 64.84% for the LHW against 48.00% and 56.25% for the indigenous breed respectively. The overall embryonic mortality was 38.13% with individual breed mortalities of 43.75% and 35.16% for the ‘I’ and ‘LHW’ breeds respectively. There are turkey tom breed differences in semen characteristics in our environment and they compare favourably with those obtained elsewhere in the tropics, but the fertility and hatchability is on the low side. The LHW toms appear to have higher reproductive potentials than the indigenous toms. |
