Interviewer instructions
If the household member is not answering the questions himself but translating for the household head then we need to note that an interpreter was used BUT if the member is conversing with the interviewer directly (not waiting for responses from the household head) THEN NO he is not an interpreter. The main thing to consider here is weather or not the main respondent has direct communication with the interviewer.
If the answer to this question is 'yes', a comment MUST be made about how smoothly the interview was carried out.
Our basis for interpreters has always been that “THE RESPONDENT SHOULD CHOOSE FOR HIMSELF” who he/she wants as an interpreter. In cases where there is no other person besides the leader, the respondent should consent to having the leader as an interpreter OTHERWISE another person of the respondent’s choosing will have to be found.
