Questions and instructions

Literal question
474. I know it may be difficult to talk about the child(ren) you had who died, but this information is very important in helping to plan health programs to prevent other children from dying.
I would like to ask you some questions about the events and symptoms your child(ren) had during the time before he/she/they died. (We will talk about one child at a time).

475. What do you think was the cause of (NAME)'s death?

Description

Definition
For young children who have died, KIDDEATHHOW reports the illness that killed the child.

Along with universe differences and slight differences in question wording, KIDDEATHHOW differs across samples in the number of response categories. Some samples include specific illnesses, while others include general illness classifications. To maximize comparability, IPUMS-DHS uses composite coding with the first digit(s) providing the category of illness, and the last digit distinguishing between specific illnesses, when this additional information is available.

Comparability - Standard DHS

KIDDEATHHOW is a country-specific variable, and it is not included in any phase of the standard DHS questionnaire.
