    Suriname conducted the field work of its Sixth Population and Housing Census during 31 March 2003 to 30 June 2003; more than 23 years after its last census.The 2003 census was preceded by the 1921, 1950, 1964, 1972 and 1980 censuses. It was conducted through Suriname's General Bureau of Statistics (GBS). This was the first census conducted legally under directions of the GBS since enactment of the new Statistics Act (S.B. 2002, no 97). Following a fire that took place soon after the 2003 census, on 25 February 2004 the Government took the decision to retake the Census (see Surname's Country Report provided under related materials).
