<span class="h3">3.20 Marital Status:</span></p>

<p>The relationship of a man and a woman as husband and wife which can be classified into:</p>
<div class="i1">a) Single: those who have never been married.<br />b) Married: those who live with their partners as husband and wife, whether they have been legally married (having marital registration), or not. During the interview, they may not live together with their husband/wife, but they still maintain such husband and wife relationship. For example, the husband is away for work in the province or abroad, they still maintain their marital status.<br />c) Widowed : those whose husband/wife died and have not been remarried.<br />d) Divorced : husband and wife who are legally divorced.<br />e) Separated : those who have not lived with their husband/wife, but have not been legally divorced.<br />f) Monk hood : the monk, novice and the priest in other religions.</div><span class="em">Columns 9 - 12 </span>
<br />Ask those who are 11 years old and over, or those who were born before or in the year 1968 (Monkey year)</p>

<p><span class="em">Column 9 Marital status: </span>
<br />Count the marital status on the date of census.</p>

<p>Ask "Let me know ..............if you are single, married, widowed, divorced, separated, or Buddhist monk?"</p>

<p>Record the marital status according to the answer corresponding to the line of the informant.</p>
<div class="i1">- If having been married but the status is not known, record "ever married."<br />- If they are Buddhist monks, priests, novices, record "Buddhist monk."<br />- If they are Buddhist nuns, ask "Have you been married?" If not, record "single." If yes, record "ever married."<br />- The marital status is not known, record "x."<br />- For separate couples, if both husband and wife still maintain their marital status, but not being able to live together for any reasons (e.g., a husband has moved to work in another province and his wife has not moved together, or a husband is going aboard, etc.), the marital status of this couple is regarded as "Married." In case that Husband is temporarily in monkhood, the marital status is "Married."</div>
