Interviewer instructions
The purpose of these questions is to measure the level of literacy. Literacy means the ability to write and read in any language with understanding. A person who can only write his/her name or who can read but not write is illiterate, i.e. not literate.37
Here, it is assured that a person who can write can also read.
If the answer is "no" code"00" on each of the three lines. If the answer is "yes", code up to three (3) languages from code list 4 -one language code for each line. Code main (first) language on top row, 2nd language on middle row and 3rd language on bottom row. If it is only one language, enter the relevant language code on the first line, and then write "00" on the remaining two lines. If the respondent is literate in two languages, enter the language codes for the first two lines, i.e. on one line for each, and "00" for the last line.
For persons who can write, put down the codes for the languages in which they are literate. Use the same language codes. For example, if a person can only write in English, put down 32 on the top row and 00 on both middle row and bottom row. If a person can write in Nama, Afrikaans and English, code 17 on the top row, 30 on the middle row and 32 on the bottom row, where 17 is the code for Nama, 30 Afrikkaans and 32 English
For don't known code "99" on the top row.
