Abstract | This paper focuses on the expectations of social studies teachers in Botswana. In doing so, it briefly provides an overview of the background of Botswana, the introduction of social studies in Botswana as an offshoot of the 1968 Mombassa conference, the link between the various educational policies in the country before finally examining the expectations of the social studies teachers in Botswana. These expectations are by no means exhaustive but in my view, provide a sort of minimum standard, that social studies teachers should be able to possess or perform so as to be able to compete with other teachers internationally. Some of these expectations include a critical understanding of the contents of social studies, the method of instructional delivery, the use of technology in teaching and an understanding of global issues in education, for the personal and professional development of social studies teachers in Botswana, in the age of global competiveness. |
