he 1993 Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventory of The Gambia is the product of unique multinational, multisectoral and interdisciplinary efforts, with contributions from all members of the National Climate Committee. The year 1993 has been chosen for the inventory because it is the year for which most national activity data are available. It represents The Gambia’s second contribution to the development of an internationally accepted methodology, IPCC Methodology, which was first introduced to the scientific community in Paris in 1991, adopted by IPCC—V, and approved in 1994.

The objective of this inventory is to estimate the levels of greenhouse gas emissions by gas and by sector for the benefit of the international scientific community, for development of national policy, and for use in future climate change studies.

This report highlights data gathering survey methodologies and input of these data into the IPCC Methodology. Results are shown by gas and by sector. The use of the Global Warming Potential Index enables the evaluation of the most important emitting sectors and the major gases emitted, on a comparative basis. It is believed that results will help in the conceptualization of global emissions and mitigation of emissions and climate change.
