Abstract | Science and technology remains the fulcrum for development over the ages. There is hardly any national development in contemporary history that is not based on consistent efforts from the science and technology sector. The spate of development in agriculture follow suit; the state of efficiency in science and technology generation correlates highly with the development of agriculture. In Africa, agriculture is considered as the sector with the best potential to lead the socioeconomic development of countries on the continent. However, the sector is bedevilled with many constraints that could be categorized as technological, socio-cultural, institutional, infrastructural, and economical. The poor productivity of the enterprise stream in the sector is clearly seen from its contribution to a country’s GDP versus the number of active workers engaged in the sector. Africa’s agriculture currently engages about 65% of the working population and its average contribution to GDP still stands at 22.9%. |
