Abstract
The discourse on globalization has largely focused on its profound effects on states and societies rather than on the everyday lives of people. This paper explores the ordinary, everyday politics of people by examining the impact of globalization on local communities. Using “everyday politics” as framework, this paper describes how the people of Rapu-Rapu, an island municipality located in Southern Luzon, Philippines, have been affected by mining over the years. Overall, mining has not brought about benefits to the communities. It has negatively affected environmental quality and has led to loss of livelihood. More significantly, mining has caused tension among the people, dividing them into “pro-mining” and “anti-mining” camps. This paper narrates the different ways by which people have responded to the consequences of mining – from passive acceptance to active protests.
