Abstract | In Burundi, the decision of the ruling party to present the candidacy of the outgoing head of State for the presidential elections for a third mandate is at the origin of a political crisis which could tip in a new violent conflict. Despite strong pressures and the internal sling within the CNDD-FDD, the president Nkurunziza has opted for the forceps. This decision has led to important demonstrations in Bujumbura and in some provinces and has also conducted to an attempt of a putsch. In addition the current crisis, with a heavy toll, has caused grave regressions in terms of human rights and public freedoms. If the African diplomacy is active to try to resolve the impasse, its weaknesses give little chances to a consensual political solution and Burundi could face a not credible electoral process boycotted by the opposition and the international community. |
