Abstract | Claire Fuller (UK, chair) emphasised the need for a global initiative to manage the disease burden of scabies; the principal challenges include the medical complications of secondary streptococcal pyoderma, the lack of a diagnostic test and the need for better understanding of mite immunology, improved treatment and control. Scabies is estimated to affect around 130 million people, notably in sub-Saharan Africa and tropical Latin America. Streptococcal pyoderma is an underestimated complication, with the risk of renal impairment which ranges from asymptomatic but persistent haematuria to nephrotic syndrome secondary to acute post streptococcal glomerulonephritis¹. |
