Abstract
The Ghana National Health Insurance scheme (GNHIS) has come at quite a critical turn of the Nation’s
economy with a few issues lingering and capable of influencing its effective take-off. Notably among such
unanswered issues features the hydra-headed issue of its acceptability. Whereas a section of the
population embraces it as a savior some others out rightly dismiss it as a political illusion. This study
directs efforts at assessing the acceptability of the NHIS to the people of Choggu. To do this, a survey
questionnaire was served to a carefully sampled 81 respondents in the study area. Linear Regression, a
Chi-square statistics and Pearson correlation were conducted with SPSS 16 statistical software to obtain
an idea of the inter-relatedness of the variables in the study. The study revealed that such a scheme was
highly accepted in the Choggu a suburb mainly made up of the education Ridge where the residents have
attained quite a high level of literacy which greatly influences acceptability. Findings include the fact that
though the scheme is hailed in Choggu, some are skeptical because of the many teething problems.
Suggestions that the study sought for addressing some of its teething problems issues included
restructuring the administrative set-up, widening the disease spectrum and reviewing the premium
payable upwards.
