Abstract
In this work we estimated the effect of the variation in the minimum wage on the
distribution of labor income in Colombia using the Colombian Household Survey for the
period 2008-2013. An analysis is carried out through the empirical estimation of an
equation of income that involves the salary and the characteristics of the individual, it is
also deemed a Gini index for the wage-earning population specifically, represented by the
Lorenz curve. The results of the analysis indicate that the effect of the minimum wage on
the population earned one or less than the minimum wage is negative and significant; with
regard to the population of higher income the effect is ambiguous. However, when
estimates are made on groups, taking into account the characteristics of the individual it
was found that the majority of the employed population and income that is between 1 and 2
minimum wage corresponds to young people between 26 and 45 years ago, male gender
and that have a basic education level.
