Abstract
This study aims to estimate the magnitude and the factors affecting the intercantonal
commuting in Ecuador, as well as their relationship with the Local
Economic Development.
The estimated number of people moving between different cantons for work
(commuting) is obtained through the processing of information presented in the
National Survey of Employment, Unemployment and Underemployment
(ENEMDU), biannual to June 2015. Moreover, determination of the factors that
influence commuting is done through a multilevel logit model that combines
information both individually and cantonal.
The results show that in Ecuador the commuting has more relevance than
internal migration and it is influenced by both individual and contextual factors.
Individual determinants that influence the decisions of the commuting are gender,
age, marital status and branch of activity that they do. As to the cantonal
determinants, the coefficient of specialization (a measure of Gross Value Added)
and the incidence of poverty, significantly influence the commuting.
