This study is entitled “The role of parents in creating HIV/AIDS awareness amongst teenagers within the family level in Kabianga
Sub L in Kericho County - Kenya.” The purpose of the study was to critically examine whether parents are involved in educating
their teenage children about HIV/AIDS and what they think is an appropriate way of educating them. An explanatory theory, the
Health Belief Model (HBM) was adopted to form the basis of the study, this theory describes the reason why a problem exists and
guides the research for factors that contribute to a problem and how the problem can be handled. A Qualitative research design
was used whereby the sources of data were structured interview schedules. The population study comprised of two sets of
respondents, namely, the parents and their teenage children. A convenient purposive sample was used in which 80 parents and 50
teenagers were requested to participate. Data was analysed in a descriptive manner. The findings of the study demonstrate that the
role of parents in creating awareness is minimal because majority of the teenagers acknowledged the fact that they get the
HIV/AIDS information from school. Therefore, the study recommends that parents be practically involved in their teenagers‟
sexuality so that they can understand each other and build a team. In addition, it recommends that the Ministry of Education,
Science and Technology work hand in hand with parents in promoting ,sensitising their children on HIV/AIDS education
curricular to be taught in schools so that parents‟ input into the education of their children is incorporated into the existing
program. Finally, the study recommends that a non-governmental organization that can educate parents on parenting be
established.
