Abstract
This article discusses the environmental problems faced by households in Khulna, a
metropolitan city of Bangladesh. Disposal of garbage in nearby drains or low lands,
discharge of waste water into open roadside drains, the concentration of hanging
latrines in lower income settlements areas, annual flooding, noise, and
domestication of cattle and poultry are major environmental problems faced by city
dwellers. Social crimes like ransacking, robbery, and toll evasion in the city are
common. Increasing awareness about environmental issues among city dwellers, and
introduction of programmes and projects are effective ways to address the
environmental problems of Khulna.
