Abstract
Inadequate and inefficient rural road transport system are some of the major constraints to food crops production and
quality of life of the people in the rural areas of Ondo Stale, Nigeria, which had been noted for high production of food
and cash crops in the country. This paper examined the adequacy and efficiency of rural transport and also determined its
effects on food crop production in Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State. In doing so, 250 copies of
designed questionnaire were randomly administered among farmers in the 25 randomly selected settlements in the study
area for this study. Data collected were analyzed using frequency tables, percentage and Chi- Squire statistical analysis. It
was discovered that some roads in the study area have been seriously eroded and totally cut off, thereby reducing linkage
and easy accessibility to farm sites. This not only, has negative effects on food crop production but has badly affected the
economic status of the rural farmers. The paper recommends that government should attach much importance to the
improvement of rural road network because of its overall positive effect on the rural famers, means of food passage and raw
materials to the people and industries in urban centres respectively.
