Abstract
The prevalence of Cadmium in kidney and liver samples of cattle was determined at cattle slaughter section of Sokoto Central abattoir Sokoto Nigeria. A total of 100 samples each of liver and kidney were collected and processed for Cadmium using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. All the samples (liver and kidney) were positive for Cadmium. The highest concentration of Cadmium in liver was found among the age groups of =9 years and the least among the age groups of 0-2 years, likewise the concentration of Cadmium in the kidney was also higher among the age group of =9 years and least among the age group of 0-2years. There was a significant difference (P< 0.05) in the concentration of Cadmium in kidney and liver samples of the different age groups of the slaughtered cattle. The concentration of Cadmium in the kidney and liver among different age groups is below the permissible level of 1mg/kg and 0.5mg/kg in kidney and liver respectively as recommended by FAO/WHO 2000. It is therefore obvious that the liver and kidney of cattle slaughtered at Sokoto Abattoir contain Cadmium at low level. This study was carried out to determine the levels of Cadmium in kidneys and liver of beef cattle obtained from Sokoto Central abattoir Sokoto State, Nigeria.
