Abstract | Traditional Expectations and Emerging Views of Raising Child ren in Urban China. During the past generation new policies in the People's Republic of China have brought profound changes in the standard of living, family size and status of women. These shifts have been accompanied by speculation regarding how departure from tradition is modifying the way children are being brought up. It seems important to find out how mothers and fathers who are allowed one child view their traditional role, whether the custom of showing favoritism to sons is being sustained, and 37 how sons and daughters are treated differently. The purpose - of this investigation was to learn how the first generation of small families assesses their strengths and limitations. Educational planners need this information so they can develop suitable courses for parents which support the best interests of children; families and society. |
