Abstract | Sedentary life style is one of the unhealthy life style that affects the health of Nigerians significantly. This development is due to industrialization and automation of activities which reduces the amount of physical exertion of Nigerians. This study examined determinants of community involvement in health and fitness related physical activities as recreation among people of Plateau State. The research technique used in the study for selecting the respondents from the population was the stratified random sampling technique. The population consisted of both male and female between the ages of 12 – 70 years who were resident in both rural and urban communities in the state. A structured questionnaire was designed and administered to selected individuals in the nine selected local government councils of the state. A total of 771 respondents were involved in the study. The data collected were subjected to statistical analysis using Ztest and spearman rho correlation procedure. Among the major findings were that awareness of perceived benefits of regular involvement in health and fitness related physical activities as recreation was significantly related to individual participation in recreational activities. Among other findings were that age, sex and location of residence were found to be significant factors for participation in recreational activities by individuals in the study areas. Among the recommendations were that the aged should be encouraged to walk with friends for at least 30 minutes each day of the week during their leisure time to promote their health and fitness, also the state, local government councils and employers of labour should provide adequate recreational facilities for their workers. |
