Abstract | This study was conducted to evaluate the socio-economic analysis, productivity and profitability of artisanal fishing households in Ogun Waterside Area, Ogun State using well structured interview guides to collect primary data from eighty respondents in four fishing communities (Iwopin, Oni, Makun-omi and Agbalegio). The information collected was analyzed using descriptive and budgetary analysis. The results reveals that almost average (53.8%) of the fisher-folks were males while 35.0% were in the active age distribution of 31- 40 years, no formal education (60.0%) while (37.5%) are in the bracket of 11-20 year fishing experience, married (91.3%) and (68.8%) are not members of any fisher society. Most (71.4%) of the fisher folks inherited the fishing knowledge within the household (or as a family business). Majority of the respondents (86.3%) record average income rates while 2.5% record low income rates, 41.3% of the respondents earned ?20,000 from the sales of fish while 22.6% earned ?10,000. The total revenue showed that 37.6% earned a total of ?84,000 while 13.9% earned between ?150,000. Results of the T tests of significance however showed that there is no significant relationship between socio-economic characteristics which include age, sex, marital status, years of experience, level of education and income level of the fisher folks within the households neither was there any significant relationship between constraints faced by the fish farmers and their profit level. Implications of these findings were critically examined, and pertinent recommendations were proffered based on the salient findings in the study. |
