Abstract | Housing supply is essentially an urban problem which is as a result of increase in population through urban-rural drift or rapid urbanisation. The study focused on the contribution of women in housing construction related skills with Ogbomosho as case study. A survey was conducted using stratified sampling method to assess women's involvement and the benefit of their chosen career. The findings reveal that women in Ogbomosho mostly contribute to housing supply in four categories, as labourers, contractors, building material sellers and building materials suppliers. Also that of these four categories, three can be said to be viable and benefiting. The findings also show that housing problem in Nigeria is far from being solved with a small percentage of women involved in the supply and a large percentage in demand for it. It also reveals that the small proportion of women in housing construction face discrimination and restriction from employers and family members which is preventing them from widening their scope of work. Based on these findings, the study recommends means of improving the livelihood of labourers, who are most under privileged of the four categories earlier mentioned. This will go a long way in solving housing and increase quality of labour force in house construction related skills. |
