Abstract | This study examines the travel behaviour of households in three different residential density areas of Lagos Metropolis using systematic sampling technique. The results show that variation exists in the travel demand of respondents across the three residential density areas. The mean trip rate and trip length and trip time per person per day is 2.6, 12.00km and 1hour 50 minutes respectively while bus and car mode are dominantly used by respondents for their daily trips. The multiple regression analysis results show that the use of GSM, income, education, employment, car ownership, gender and household size affect travel demand and that these factors also vary across the three residential density areas. This study concludes that planning decisions and policies directed at meeting the mobility needs in any society should not be generalized; rather, it should be made to recognize and respond to the travel demand of different socio-economic groups in the society. It should also take cognizance of the identified factors in the prediction of households’ travel behaviour. |
