Abstract
Rising cost of foodstuffs affect the welfare of majority of Nigerians who live below the poverty line of one dollar per day. The
study conducted in Imo State, Nigeria examined correlation of food crop staples to food price index and coefficient of
variation of the prices of the food stuffs. It also examined causes of high cost of food stuffs. Results revealed significant
correlations between food stuffs and consumers price index for food items; and high coefficients of variation of prices of food
stuffs. Study result also identified the causes of rising cost of food stuffs as rising cost of transportation, lack of adequate
storage facilities, and cost of renting business premises and high farm-gate prices of the food stuffs. Appropriate government
