Abstract | Rapid urbanization in Lagos, Nigeria presents a number of development challenges. Lagos is Africa’s most populous city with a population of nearly 20 million people. It is the most prosperous city in Nigeria, where much of the nation’s wealth and economic activity are concentrated. Although Lagos’ standard of living is the highest in Nigeria, Lagos does not meet any of the targets set in the Vision 2010 agenda by the Nigerian government, or the United Nation’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). This paper examines the challenges of urbanization in Lagos, which include: political control, population growth and dynamics, socio-economics, infrastructure, and solid waste management. Urbanization controls and possible solutions are also discussed |
