Abstract
This paper explores the impact of rural outmigration on the rural household
consumption and productive investment. My findings indicate that though migrant
remittances make no significant contribution to either household consumption or
productive investment, migrant families are indeed better off on household
consumption compared with non-migrant families after the sample self-selection
problem is taken into account. Lack of financial support may be one of key factors
which barrier household productive investment. Policy implications and direction
for further research are also discussed.
