Abstract
Family planning, an official and fundamental policy of the People's Republic of China, was adopted as a measure to limit, and to eventually decrease the size of China's rapidly growing population. To convince couples of child bearing age to conform to the policy requires a massive and persuasive educational program. But limiting family size to one child is contrary to the traditional values of Chinese society, and adapting to this policy has created and will continue to create changes and stresses within the structure of the family and the society. China's young parents, concerned about their own ability to rear an only child, seek assistance and advice through parent education classes.
