China’s National Minority Education: Culture, Schooling, and Development, edited by Gerard A. Postiglione of the University of Hong Kong, is concerned with multicultural education in the People’s Republic of China (PRC). It deals with general issues and specific histories of education among national and religious minority people under an authoritarian Communist government. As opposed to the familiar self-depiction of the Chinese government as a champion of the cause of "Third World" peoples of color internationally, this volume provides us with a rare look at the lived experience, cultural memory, and educational processes experienced by minority people within the Chinese state. The material challenges us to think in more nuanced ways about the ambivalence of minority people about participating in the state-sponsored, Han-centered, standardized, test-driven, free and compulsory school system of the PRC.
