Various stakeholders (Uganda government, developmental agencies, Non-government organization, Citizens’ organizations and individuals) have developed different HIV /AIDS related materials in an endeavor to effectively disseminate HIV information, targeting the poor of the poorest illiterate Ugandans. However these efforts are hindered by several challenges which include: Low literacy levels of average Ugandans, the gender question, culture, economic, political and social factors. However, amidst these challenges the question of developing HIV/AIDS materials in indigenous languages in the absence of a standardized HIV terminology if understood has been grossly neglected. This presentation, therefore, discusses the challenges of translating HIV related messages into Ugandan languages in the absence of a standardized HIV terminology and relating this challenge to multilingualism and multiculturalism.
