Abstract | This paper investigates persistent differentials in urban unemployment rates. It proposes a model of the long run labour market equilibrium in an urban region that shares migration routes with other urban regions as well as with its rural sector. Using a panel of data for Indian regions, two structural unemployment-wage relations are identified, a wage curve and a (modified) migration equilibrium condition. The analysis is conducted for regular unemployment as well as for underemployment. |
