Abstract | Unorganized sector is being proved to be an important employment avenue since the last few decades. In the current globalised scenario, the sector has possibilities to exploit an extended market. Micro enterprises not registered under Indian Factor Act 1948 and employing less than nine workers (for the purpose of the study), with strong linkage effect to other sectors of the economy, is seen to occupy a vital role in regional and state’s economic development. The present paper tries to locate an overview of the trend in growth of enterprises at disaggregated level using the data revealed by Economic census of Meghalaya for last three censuses viz. 1990, 1998 and 2005. It is also tried to observe the contribution of enterprises working as Own Account Enterprises (OAE) and Micro enterprises in non agricultural sector of the state and their employment status for the said census years. Growing casualization of the workforce in general and formal sector stagnancy has given a large platform to the unorganized enterprises. In the three economic censuses, it is seen to be growing at a rapid pace in all the districts of Meghalaya. |
