The baseline survey on conservation agriculture (CA) has been conducted to assess the major constraints and potentials to development and adoption of CA in diversified rice-based cropping systems of 350 farm households covering four districts in Bangladesh. Among the selected districts, two districts were Rajbari and Tangail where the CA based research has been done previously by BARI and CIMMYT Bangladesh. The other two districts namely Rangpur and Mymensingh have been selected where the ACIAR started its works since July 2013. Purposive sampling has been drawn and primary farm level data were collected during the period from July to October 2013. Evidence showed that most of the farmers under Mymensingh and Rangpur don’t have any knowledge in sowing/ transplanting by machineries, while farmers under Rajbari and Tangail districts have comparatively better knowledge. It has been found that knowledge of CA have shown variations in different parameters such as negative impact of excessive tillage and benefits of using organic matter in soil. In the case of tillage operations, draft power use was higher than other machineries in all cropping seasons and other machineries utilization were more or less similar. Country plough use in the case of tillage operations was higher compared to other ploughs. Respondent farmers having own farm-machineries use for their own purpose as well as rent out while, those who didn’t have any machines they generally use by renting from the machine owners but very few machines are used for rented out. In the case of power tiller users, the utilization was higher in three categories viz. they use only for themselves and sometimes rented out and those who don’t have any power tiller they generally hired it from the power tiller owner. Farmers mostly rent power tiller. It is also seen that conservation tillage practice rate was higher in old CA research sites than the new CA research sites and adoption rate of zero tillage practice was very low if it is considered among all the households. |
