Abstract |
The present study was basically designed to assess the relative profitability of the selected winter vegetables namely potato and carrot. In total, 60 farmers (30 from each of the potato and carrot growing farmers) were randomly selected from the purposively selected villages namely Sanadia and Chak Shamrampur under Porangong Union in Sadar Upazila of Mymensingh District. Descriptive statistics, activity budgets and Cobb-Douglas production function model were employed to achieve the major objectives of the study. The major findings of the study revealed that production of all the selected vegetables were profitable. Per hectare gross cost of production of potato and carrot were Tk 193779.00 and Tk 139574.00, respectively and the corresponding gross return were Tk 299500.00, and Tk 334925.00, respectively. Per hectare net returns of producing potato and carrot were Tk 105720.00 and Tk 195350.00, respectively, In other words, both the selected vegetables were highly profitable from the viewpoint of growers. But the farmers earned relatively much higher profit from carrot than that of the potato. The results of Cobb-Douglas production function model indicated that per hectare gross returns were significantly influenced by the use of human labour, tillage operation, seeds, fertilizers, irrigation, insecticides and manure. These factors were directly or jointly responsible for influencing per hectare gross returns of both potato and carrot. The study also indicated that the farmers of both the vegetables were facing some problems and constraints. These problems were: shortage of financial capital, high prices of inputs, low prices of output, lack of quality seeds, inadequate extension services, etc. Based on the findings of the study, some recommendations were suggested to improve cultural and management practices for the selected vegetable farming with a view to increasing the income and employment opportunities of the farmers. Thus, the rural farmers can have much income by cultivating both potato and carrot. |
