Definition
For women who had symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection in the past 12 months, STIADIA2 indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported seeking advice or treatment from a "dai," or traditional birth attendant (TBA), for this problem. This response category is country-specific to India.
Some samples in the "STIAD" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
STIADIA2 is combined with STIADIA1 (traditional healer) and STIADIA3 (vaidya/hakim/homeopath) in STIADPRIVHL (all traditional healers) for the 2005 India sample.
IPUMS-DHS users interested in using STIADIA2 are encouraged to review STIADPRIVHL for a more comprehensive response category.
