Definition
For children with diarrhea in the past 2 weeks, DIATRPK4 indicates, in response to an open-ended question, whether the child received treatment from a hakim (or herbalist). This response category is country-specific to Pakistan.
Some samples in the "DIATR" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
DIATRPK4 is combined with other traditional practitioners and healers in the 1991, 2006, 2012, and 2017 Pakistan surveys:
In the 1991 Pakistan survey, DIATRPK4 is combined with DIATRPK3 (homeopath) and DIATRPK6 (faith healer) in DIATRPRIVHL (all traditional practitioners/healers).
In the 2006 and 2012 Pakistan samples, DIATRPK4 is combined with DIATRPK3 (homeopath) and DIATRPK5 (dai/traditional birth attendant) in DIATRPRIVHL (all traditional practitioners/healers).
In the 2017 Pakistan sample, DIATRPK4 is combined with DIATRPK3 (homeopath), DIATRPK5 (dai/traditional birth attendant), and DIATRPPK11 (community midwife) in DIATRPRIVHL (all traditional practitioners/healers).
IPUMS-DHS users interested in using DIATRPK4 are encouraged to review DIATRPRIVHL for a more comprehensive response category.
