Myanmar as a Party to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control had adopted the Control of Smoking and Consumption of Tobacco Products Law in 2006 which came into effect in May, 2007. Ministry of Health has been implementing tobacco control activities in collaboration with related ministries. Myanmar conducted Global Youth Tobacco Surveys (GYTS) in 2001, 2004 and 2007.
Designed as standardized tool to collect data on tobacco use among youth in countries around the globe, the 2001 Myanmar Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS) is a school-based survey of students aged 13-15 years. It provides a uniform methodology for constructing a sample frame, selecting schools and classes, preparing questionnaires, conducting fieldwork, and managing, processing, and analyzing data.

The GYTS questionnaire covers topics such as young people’s knowledge and attitudes about smoking, prevalence of tobacco use, the role of advertising and media in tobacco use, and access to cigarettes.
