<li>Do not read out loud option 7, "Is deaf-mute." Circle this option only if the informant did not learn to speak a language because he/she is deaf-mute.</li>

This refers to the language or dialect which the person first learned to speak, whether or not he/she currently speaks the language.<br /><span class="ital">Example</span>: Lucas was born in the mountains of Peru.
