Income/Expenditure/Household Survey [hh/ies]
Household Budget Survey provides detailed information on social and economic aspects of the welfare of the population and households. The information contained in the sections of the survey allows for in-depth analysis of socio-economic status of households and individual members at the moment or over time. Thus, the survey reveals poor households and individuals, or those households that were unprotected by social policies. The results of household surveys are also used in analyzing the impact of various economic effects of the transition period, the socio-economic status of the population.
Household Budget Survey has more than 50-year history. The first survey was conducted in Moldova in 1954, the survey methodology has been modified with the changing socio-economic situation in the country. The biggest change occurred in 1996 in connection with the economic reforms in the country and the transition to the market economy. Currently used methodology was designed to meet international standards.
Information obtained from the Household Budget Survey is used in the calculation of some macroeconomic indicators: final consumption of households, the Consumer Price Index, the informal trade, etc. Each year, the main indicators of income and expenditure and living conditions are presented to various international organizations: International Labor Organization, World Bank, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, etc.
Moldova Household Budget Survey (HBS) 1998 was implemented by the Department for Statistics and Sociology of the Republic of Moldova, presently known as the National Bureau of Statistics of the Republic of Moldova.
Household Budget Survey is a nationally representative survey that provides information on living standards in Moldova through the collection of households' income and consumption data, as well as non-monetary indicators covering education, health, employment, housing, asset ownership, and self-assessed living conditions. Information obtained from the survey is also used to calculate the weights for the Consumption Price Index, and the households' final consumption. The HBS has been conducted quarterly starting in 1997.
Data is collected through face-to-face interviews and the households' income and expenditure diary.

Coverage
National
Population of the Household Budget Survey consists of all individual Moldovan households. Institutional households, such as hospitals, students' hostels, prisons, or senior citizens' houses, were not included in the survey. However, workers' hostels were included in the study.

Sampling
Each quarter, the HBS interviews about 1,600 households. A sub-sample of these households is maintained as panel observations in an elaborate rotation scheme. The survey design follows a common two-stage sample design. Primary Sampling Units (PSUs) were selected in the first stage, derived from the polling lists of the polling districts from 1996. In the second stage, households are selected from the household listing in each selected primary sampling units (PSU). The size of the annual sample was 7,920 households beginning from January 1998.

Diary of the household is self-reported by the head of the household or another household member, who is able to properly maintain records, daily or as often as possible. In cases where a household cannot completely fill the diary itself, information is collected by the interviewer (the interviewer asks the household to fill in diary for them).
Data Access
The use of the datasets must be acknowledged using a citation which would include:
- the identification of the Primary Investigator (including country name),
- the full title of the survey and its acronym (when available), and the year(s) of implementation,
- the survey reference number,
- the source and date of download (for datasets disseminated online).
