<p><span class="em">12. Ethnic characteristics</span>
<br />This question set is a new one which combines related variables and is intended to determine the ethnic make-up of the population. It is distinct from the "ethnic group" question, which is based on self-identification.</p>
<p>Only ask people who are three years old or older the questions these questions, which are about the first language learned; the ability to speak one of the Mayan languages or Spanish; and Mayan outfit.</p>
<p><span class="em">Question A</span>
<br />Ask, "What language did you first learn to speak?" and mark an X in the appropriate circle.</p>
<p>If the person first learned to speak a Mayan language that is not specified in the box (K'iché, Kaqchikel, Mam, Q'eqchi'), mark an X in the circle for option 5, "other Mayan language," and specify which one in the space provided.</p>
<p>Fill in the circle for option 7, "other language," if the person's maternal language is neither Mayan nor Spanish. Specify the language in the space provided.
